Studies on the Growth and Flower Bud Formation of Forsythia koreana N., F. saxatilis N., and F. ovata N.
Yeam Do-Yi

Abstract
Growth pattern and flower bud initiation of three Korea-native Forsythia species were examined according to growth stage. The results are as follows:
1. The flowering duration of Forsythia koreana at Suweon lasted from April 8, 1977 to April 25, 1977. The upper shoot from flowered branch of F. koreana grew from April 20 to May 20 and showed single sigmoid growth curve. The basal shoot (water sprout) grew from April 20 to August 20 and showed double sigmoid growth curve.
2. The flower buds of the upper shoot in F. koreana were distributed almost uniformly along the internode but the flower buds of the basal shoot were mainly formed on the upper part of the shoot.
3. The flowering duration of F. saxatilis at Suweon lasted from April 12, 1977 to April 30. The upper shoot from flowered branch of F. saxatilis grew from April 20 to June 20 and showed single sigmoid growth curve. The basal shoot grew continuously from April 20 to August 20 and also showed single sigmoid curve.
4. The flower buds of the upper shoot in F. saxatilis were distributed almost uniformly along the internode and the flower buds of the basal shoot were distributed also uniformly but less on the mid part in longer shoot.
5. The flowering duration of F. ovata at Suweon lasted from April 4, 1977 to April 20, The upper shoot from flowered branch of F.ovata grew from April 20 to June 20 and showed single sigmoid growth curve. The basal shoot grew continuously from April 20 to August 20 and showed double sigmoid growth curve.
6. The flower buds of the both upper and basal shoot of F. ovata were distributed almost uniformly along the internode.
